Safer Southall

Ongoing Projects

Safer Southall

Project Overview

Southall Community Alliance in partnership with Cadent Gas is delivering the Safer Southall project to improve gas safety awareness and promote energy efficiency among residents across Southall.

Through this project, we are ensuring that residents- particularly those who are most vulnerable- receive clear, reliable guidance on key issues affecting their safety and wellbeing. This includes:

  • Comprehensive information on gas safety, helping households recognise potential hazards and how to respond.
  • Awareness of Carbon Monoxide risks, along with practical steps residents can take to safeguard their homes.
  • Support and Advice on energy efficiency, offering strategies that help reduce energy use and manage rising gas costs.
  • Signposting to essential support services, such as the Priority Services Register, and assistance in connecting residents to existing resources that can offer further help.

Through this partnership, the Safer Southall project is strengthening community awareness, improving home safety, and supporting residents with the knowledge they need to stay safe and use energy more efficiently.

Our commitment is to our community – together, let’s build a safer Southall!

Outputs Achieved

Following the aims set out in the Safer Southall project, the work completed reflects a combination of direct education, community outreach, partnership strengthening and targeted support for vulnerable residents. The project has delivered wide-reaching, practical support to households across Southall, ensuring residents have the knowledge, tools and resources needed to improve gas safety and use energy more efficiently. The outputs achieved to date demonstrate both the scale and depth of engagement across the community.

Home Energy Advice and Support:

  • 150+ residents received dedicated one on one home energy efficiency advice to help reduce energy use and manage rising costs.
  • A wider group of over 500 residents were reached through community-based energy efficiency sessions, where simple, effective tips were shared.
  • To support households that may require additional assistance, over 300 conversations were conducted about Priority Services Register (PSR) eligibility and benefits. As a result, 10 residents successfully registered.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Safety and Education:

  • More than 100 BAME (Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic) families received one-to-one CO awareness education, ensuring messaging was accessible, relevant and culturally sensitive.
  • Through structured outreach efforts, the project engaged 30 local community organisations, providing information on the signs, symptoms and risks associated with carbon monoxide.
  • In line with improving household safety, over 200 free carbon monoxide alarms provided by Cadent were distributed to vulnerable households, enabling families to reduce the risk of CO exposure.
  • Across all CO-focused initiatives, the project reached over 500 residents, strengthening community-wide understanding of how to implement gas safety at home.

Community Outreach and Engagement:

  • Energy Zones were set up at major faith events such as Eid and Christmas, offering leaflets, advice and signposting to further support services.
  • In partnership with the Punjabi Theatre Academy an outdoor theatre event was organised, reaching 500+ residents.
  • Additional energy-awareness sessions were delivered at St George’s Church, Voice of Women, and Mahila Sabha, ensuring information reached residents across different community spaces.
  • Regular Centre for Warmth drop-ins at the Havelock Centre created ongoing opportunities for residents to seek advice and access resources.

Strengthening Community Partnerships:

  • More than 6 networking meetings with over 20 voluntary sector organisations were organised, enhancing shared understanding of energy challenges.
  • Collectively, these organisations represent over 200 service users, enabling the project’s messages and resources to be shared more widely across the community.
